The named ticket

To enter Pompeii you need a ticket with your name, the day and the time band of access. This is established by the Park's regulations of 23 December 2025, with practical consequences for documents, refunds and date changes.

The text is called «General Conditions and Access Regulations of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii» and is attached to decree 446 of 23 December 2025. You can find it in PDF on the Park's website. Here we summarise the parts that matter for those buying a ticket: who can use it, what happens at the controls, when it is refunded.

It concerns the official ticket, which is bought online on Vivaticket or at the ticket offices inside the archaeological area. Tours on GetYourGuide with entry included also ask for the names of participants: at the end we see how.

The answer in brief

The Pompeii ticket shows the name, day and time band, is personal and cannot be transferred. Staff may ask you for an ID at every entrance: if the name does not match, you will not be allowed in and will not receive a refund. The ticket is non-refundable, except in the event of extraordinary closure of the Park, and name and date cannot be changed.

What is the Pompeii named ticket?

It is the ticket that «uniquely reports the visitor's name as well as the day and time band of access», as Article 2 of the regulations states.

The regulations define it as «personal and non-transferable». It can be bought in two ways: online, on the portal indicated on the Park's website, or at the ticket office by presenting a valid ID. The Park indicates Vivaticket as the only authorised online seller; the official ticket offices are only inside the archaeological area, at the entrances of Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra and Piazza Anfiteatro.

In practice, each person has a ticket with their name. Are you buying for family or a group of friends? You need the first and last name of everyone before paying.

The ticket is valid for one person, one day and one time band.

Do you need an ID to enter Pompeii?

Yes, bring it: at every entrance, staff may ask for an ID to verify that the name on the ticket is yours.

Article 2.3 is clear: «In case of non-compliance, the visitor will not be admitted and will not be entitled to a refund of the ticket». Checks do not stop at the turnstiles. The Park reserves the right to carry out random checks at any time during the visit.

It applies to all members of the group. Some tour cards ask for an ID even for children, and one warns that minors may be asked at the entrance. A photo of the ID on the phone? Only one card explicitly accepts it: in case of doubt, bring the original.

Is the Pompeii ticket refundable? Can the date be changed?

No. «Named tickets are non-refundable, except in cases of extraordinary closure of the Park», and neither the name nor the date can be changed.

This is Article 2.4. If a person in the group can no longer come, their ticket does not pass to another. If the trip changes, the date remains the one printed. It is best to buy when dates and names are certain.

Tours on GetYourGuide with entry included, according to the cards, can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before. These are two different conditions: compare them with your schedule before choosing.

The guided tour with archaeologist includes the Pompei Express and can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before.

What are the time bands and the 20,000 entry limit?

The limit is 20,000 entries per day: 15,000 in the morning band, from 9:00 to 13:00, and 5,000 in the afternoon band.

The bands are in Appendix A of the regulations; in winter the second one ends earlier, at 15:30. On the prices page, the Park also divides the summer places by ticket type: in the morning 12,000 Pompei Express and 3,000 Pompei+, in the afternoon 3,000 Pompei Express and 2,000 Pompei+.

Article 3.2 allows the Park's director general to modify Annex A with a reasoned decision, also based on expected visitor numbers for the season. Before you leave, check the official Hours and Prices page.

How do names work with a tour on GetYourGuide?

Cards with entry included ask for the names of participants, because the Park's ticket remains nominative; times and methods are indicated by each operator.

Groups organised by operators accredited with the ticket office manager enter with a single group ticket, with the name of the tour operator (Article 4.1). A group of more than 35 people cannot enter; above 15 people, headphones or whisper devices are required.

The daily cap of 20,000 visitors remains in force. The upcoming dates, from November 2026 to June 2027, are in the article on free Sundays. For all other days, the rules above apply.
